Patrick McGowan
Associate Professor
Patrick McGowanBackground: Patrick joined the Centre on Aging in January of 2002 and directs the Ladner Satellite Office. Previously, he was the Associate Director of the Institute of Health Promotion Research at the University of British Columbia. During the last 20 years his main research focus has been on investigating implementation of best practices and effectiveness with health education programs for persons experiencing chronic health conditions - especially self-management programs and strategies.

Jay (Jagdev) Bains
Jay BainsBackground: Jay coordinates the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program for Punjabi-speaking residents of British Columbia. Jay, a Paul Harris Fellow Rotarian, has meaningful experience in employment, mentoring, health and wellness initiatives. A humble personality with Masters Degrees in English and Physical Education, Jay has a well developed sense of multiculturalism and he speaks Punjabi, Hindi and Bengali comfortably. His expertise includes: facilitating workshops, recruiting, training, and empowering volunteers to initiate leadership activities. Practising and writing articles on yoga and health is his passion.

Christine Bramwell
Background: Christine is part of the Ladner Office administrative team. She provides administrative support to the Ladner office and her previous corporate experience in the insurance industry enables her to bring a solid background in office procedure along with her organizational skills. Christine is a graduate of the University of Victoria with a Bachelor of Arts in History.

Rhonda Carriere
Rhonda CarriereBackground: Rhonda coordinates self-management programs for the Fraser Health Region (east) and First Nations' communities. Rhonda's background includes experience with various non-profit, volunteer and Aboriginal populations. She brings more than a decade of experience as the former Associate Director of a community-based theology education program for First Nations people.

Terry Cayer

Terry CayerBackground: : Terry coordinates self-management programs for the Interior Health Region. Her initial involvement with the program began as a volunteer leader and then trainer. This, combined with her degree in psychology, experience with Police Victim Services, and many years volunteer experience and management in the non-profit and service sector provided a natural segue into coordinating the various Self-Management Programs.

Janice Claydon
Background: Janice came to the Ladner Office by taking the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program in 2004 and was "hooked". She has subsequently led many workshops in most of the disciplines and is a Master Trainer. She initially volunteered at the office. Janice brings a diverse employment background and credits the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program in enabling her to once again join the workforce.

June Clearsky
June ClearskyBackground: Juen is one of the Aboriginal Liaison Coordinators for the self-management programs. She began initially by hosting a leader training, then became a volunteer leader. June has worked many years in the Aboriginal Community in Vancouver and her passion is providing wellness through Lomilomi Massage (Hawaiian Massage). She is a great addition to the Ladner Team.

Mark Davies
Background: Mark DaviesAfter having been a CDSMP Volunteer Leader, Mark joined the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) as Program Coordinator in January 2000. He has coordinated the program in four of the five health region, the exception being Northern Health. From December 2001 to March 2004, he coordinated the Diabetes Self-Management Program throughout the entire province. Mark has been the Senior Program Coordinator for self-management programs since 2009, with specific responsibility for the Vancouver Island Health Region. His extensive business background and people skills in both human resources and people administration have proven to be very useful in the coordination of these self-management programs for people, like himself, with a number of chronic health conditions. Mark has a history of volunteerism both in the non-profit, business and sporting fields and is very motivated in ensuring pertinent and timely delivery of community- based programs.

Gemma Fletcher
Background: Gemma is the Program Coordinator for the provincial Online Chronic Disease Self-Management Program. She is a computer enthusiast and is passionate about increasing the accessibility of Self-Management Programs. Gemma holds a Bachelors Degree in Psychology and brings several years of experience in program coordination and human resources. Her interests include event planning, aerobics and learning about different cultures. She has travelled to 5 different continents including North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

Natalie Gauthier
Background: Natalie is a Research Project Analyst here at the Centre on Aging and is currently coordinating a Lawson Foundation funded self-management study that is  looking at how Diabetes Self-Management Program and the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program are effective with individuals living with Diabetes type-2. She worked as a student researcher with the Ladner Office in 2007 while studying gerontology and anthropology at Simon Fraser University. In 2009, she obtained a Master’s of Science degree in social policy from the University of Bath in the UK. Her background is in cultural aspects to aging, geriatrics, chronic disease, long-term care, dementia, health and wellness and end-of-life issues.

Karen HannahBackground: Karen coordinates self-management programs in the Vancouver Coastal Health Region (excluding the Sea to Sky region). Her initial involvement with the program began as a volunteer leader and then as a trainer. Karen brings several years of experience delivering health and social service programs in culturally diverse communities.

Suzanne Harmandian
Suzanne HarmandianBackground: Suzanne is part of the Ladner Office administrative team. Eric Hueber
Background: Eric coordinates self-management programs in Fraser Health (West), Sunshine Coast, Sea-to-Sky corridor and Powell River. He comes to the team as volunteer leader with the Chronic Disease Self-management program. He has a wealth of experience in the corporate health-care industry and as a independent consultant; specializing in Government Relations, Health Policy, patient advocacy, stakeholder relations, research and concept development.   Eric is an active participant in volunteer services in his community and maintains a keen interest in health and wellness programs.

Karen Hula
      Background: Karen is a Marketing and Special Projects coordinator for the Ladner Office.  Karen has 8 years experience in sales, marketing and event management with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from UBC.  Additionally, Karen has worked in the non-profit sector in corporate fundraising and has a history working with volunteers on various projects and events.

Navah Jacobs
Background: Navah is a research assistant with University of Victoria's Ladner Office research team. She facilitates as a leader and Master Trainer for the Self-Management Programs and delights in that interactive learning environment. Her experience in the health science field over the past 20 years has included clinical practice and teaching in the Health Sciences department of Douglas College. Previous volunteer experience includes a focus on the geriatric sector where Navah provided congnitive support to non-ambulatory clients.

Courtney Kang
Background: Courtney coordinates self-management programs specifically for Chinese communities. Her training and working experiences have been on the crossroad between health and education. With her medical background, she loves to empower and mobilize patients. Courtney spent a year on two practicum placements to evaluate and implement various patient self-management programs. Upon graduation from UBC with a Master's degree in Public Health, she looks forward to serving the health needs of Chinese-speaking residents living with chronic health conditions.

Challayne Kenney
Challayne Kenney Background: Challayne is the Coordinator for Self-Management Programs for the Northern Health Region. She has worked to bring evidence-based health education and promotion strategies to multiple communities through her work with various not-for-profit, academic and municipal government organizations. Challayne holds a Master’s degree in Health Education from SFU and her interest lies in support for improving the quality of life for people living with chronic health conditions.

Sherry LynchBackground: Sherry works as a Research Associate and has a background in psychology and social work. Parminder Rai
Background: Parminder will be coordinating the research project for the Punjabi Diabetes Self-Management Program. She is a Master Trainer with the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program. She has a B.A from India in History and Home Economics and various certificates from Canada in family counselling. She has 18 years of  experience working with non-profit organizations as a Stopping the Violence counsellor, advocate for families and as a coordinator for many projects and programs. As well, she has numerous years experience working  with diverse communities in the legal education of adults through group facilitation and live call-in radio shows.

Jennifer Ramsay
Jennifer Ramsay Background: Jennifer works as a Research Project Analyst and has many years of experience teaching and working with multi-cultural and Aboriginal communities in Canada, the Caribbean and Korea. At the University of the West Indies, in Kingston Jamaica, she worked as part of a team developing curriculum for adult foreign language students in the Caribbean. Jennifer has her Masters degree in Teacher Education.  Some of the projects that she has been involved in at the University of Victoria include the Punjabi Chronic Disease Self-Management Program Pilot Project and the British Columbia Ministry of Health Self-Management Mapping Project. More recently, Jennifer has been working on various communication initiatives which include managing social networking sites and writing an email newsletter that provides readers with the latest BC health news every two weeks.

Background: Angela is the Program Coordinator of the Active Choices program, a provincial physical activity telephone program supporting people to achieve their physical activity goals. Angela is an experienced and skilled facilitator with extensive experience working with community groups, small businesses and government organizations. Carol SicoliBackground:
Carol is responsible for coordinating self-management programs in the Fraser Health (North) area. Her initial involvement with the program began as a  volunteer leader. In June 2009, Carol was excited to join the team as a strong advocate of health and well-being.  Carol's extensive background as a human resources practitioner and facilitator in adult learning serves her well in this position.  Her desire and passion is to achieve a Masters in Leadership at Royal Roads University where she is completing a thesis on volunteer leadership and management.
